What is appendix surgery?
The appendix is a small pouch attached to the start of the large intestine. When it becomes inflamed or infected (appendicitis), it usually needs to be removed. Laparoscopic appendicectomy removes the appendix through a few small incisions using a camera and fine instruments.
Who might need it?
Surgery is the usual treatment for acute appendicitis. The diagnosis is made through clinical assessment and, where needed, imaging; symptoms often begin with pain near the navel that moves to the lower right abdomen, sometimes with fever, nausea or loss of appetite.
Appendicitis can be an emergency. If you have severe or worsening abdominal pain, please seek medical care promptly.
Recovery
Recovery after uncomplicated keyhole appendix surgery is usually quick. In uncomplicated appendicitis, patients can often be discharged within about 24 hours and return to normal activities over a short period. Recovery may take longer if the appendix had burst.
